Why do I overthink everything?

Overthinking is the mind trying to make something feel safe by thinking it through one more time. It usually comes from one of five places: a need to control uncertainty, fear of making a mistake, using thought to keep a feeling at arm's length, scanning people for signs of trouble, or a nervous system that rarely idles. The loop feels productive. It almost never produces a decision.

What it looks like

The usual reasons

Thinking as control

If you can think every scenario through, nothing can catch you off guard. Each rehearsal feels like a risk removed.

Where a chart tends to show it: Moon in Virgo, Mercury in Virgo, Saturn in Gemini

Fear of getting it wrong

When a mistake feels unforgivable, every choice has to be checked again before it is allowed.

Where a chart tends to show it: Saturn in Virgo, Sun in Virgo, Jupiter in Virgo

Thinking instead of feeling

Analyzing a feeling keeps you one step away from having it. The thinking is the shelter.

Where a chart tends to show it: Moon in Gemini, Moon in Aquarius, Life Path 7

Scanning people for trouble

Rereading a text for hidden meaning, tracking every change in someone's tone, so a rejection never arrives unannounced.

Where a chart tends to show it: Mercury in Scorpio, Mercury in Cancer, Moon in Cancer

A nervous system that will not idle

Some people run hot. The mind keeps moving because the body never got the signal that it is safe to stop.

Where a chart tends to show it: Life Path 11, Soul Urge 11, Mars in Virgo

Same behavior, different reasons

One person overthinks because a mistake feels unforgivable. Another overthinks because thinking is safer than feeling. Telling the first to just decide makes them more anxious. Telling the second to stop thinking takes away the only distance they have from the feeling.

Self Dictionary finds yours. It calculates your chart and numbers from your birth date, time, and place, weighs every signal together, and writes which of these reasons is actually yours, as plain behavior. It shows up in these areas:
